چکیده

BACKGROUND The role of dietary factors in the epidemiology of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) remains largely undefined. Dietary habits may play a role in the etiology of NHL by influencing the immune system. METHODS Dietary patterns and the risk of NHL were analyzed in a case control study; including 170 NHL cases and 190 controls. All subjects completed a validated food-frequency questionnaire. The dietary pattern was investigated separately and in nine nutritional groups. Crosstab tables were used to estimate the odds ratios (OR), and P(trend). RESULTS Consumption of highest versus lowest quartile of proteins (OR, 8.088 P(trend)=0.000), fats (OR, 6.17 P(trend)=0.000) and sweets (OR, 8.806 P(trend)=0.000) were associated with a significantly increased NHL risk. The inverse association was found for fresh fruits (OR, 0.117 P(trend)=0.000) and vegetables (OR, 0.461 P(trend)=0.010). CONCLUSION An association between dietary intake and the risk of NHL is biologically plausible due to immunosuppressive effects of fat and animal proteins, and antioxidant properties of vegetables and fruits.

Environmental Risk Factors for Acute Leukemia and Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in Children

Abstract Objective The incidence of childhood cancer has been increasing nearly one percent per year for the past two decades. Leukemia and lymphoma are the most common types of childhood cancers. This study assessed the relation between environmental factors (Hydrocarbon, agricultural toxin, insecticide) and leukemia/lymphoma in children, which was evaluated by the frequency of the parents...

Risk of malignancy in patients with celiac disease.

PURPOSE Studies from Europe have demonstrated an increased risk of malignancy, especially non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, in patients with celiac disease. However, there are no data on the risk for similar patients in the United States. Our aim was to estimate the risk of malignancy in a cohort of patients with celiac disease compared with the general U.S. population and to determine if a gluten-free d...

PRIMARY PANCREATIC LYMPHOMA: A CASE REPORT AND LITERATURE REVIEW

Primary pancreatic lymphoma is a rare extranodal manifestation of any histopathologic subtype of B cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that predominantly involves the pancreas. It comprises less than 0.2% of pancreatic malignancies and less than 0.7% of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. This lymphoma is almost never suspected clinically. It is usually diagnosed by surgical exploration for suspected adenoca...

Alcohol, smoking, and body size in relation to incident Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma risk.

Studies associate alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking, and body size with the risk of overall or subtype lymphoma. Current data come mostly from case-control studies or prospective studies with few cases. In the prospective National Institutes of Health-former American Association of Retired Persons (NIH-AARP) Diet and Health Study, the authors assessed the above lifestyle factors via baseli...

Study of the ratio of Treg/Th1 and Treg/Th2 lymphocytes in Hodgkin's lymphoma patients and its relationship with disease prognosis

Background and purpose: CD4+CD25+FOXP3+ regulatory T cells (CD4+CD25+FOXP3+ Tregs) are a group of T lymphocytes that play an important role in regulating immune system responses by suppressing the activity of other T cells and establishing homeostasis in the immune system. Th1 and Th2 cells are other groups of CD4+ cells that play important functions in inducing inflammatory immune responses. C...
